3 questions I wish line managers would ask when employees share fertility challenges

Navigating fertility challenges while balancing work responsibilities can be emotionally draining and deeply personal. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to open up about these struggles, fearing judgement or simply wanting to keep it private. But as workplaces strive for inclusivity, it's essential for line managers to respond with sensitivity and support when an employee confides in them about their fertility journey.

When I approached my Managing Director about my own challenges, I literally talked to a wall! I couldn't bear to look him in the eye for fear of breaking down. I had important things to share and I needed to get through it without crying. That's why I believe these three questions are essential for managers to ask in such situations:

  1. "How can I support you?"

This question is like a breath of fresh air after baring your soul. It shows immediate care and commitment, making the employee feel safe and valued. Support can take many forms, from flexible work arrangements to providing mental health resources or simply offering to listen. They may want a lighter workload or they may want a big juicy project to serve as a distraction. Everyone's needs are different, so it's important to ask rather than assume.

  2. "Are there any accommodations I can make for you in the office?"

Fertility treatment can leave you feeling exhausted, bloated, and emotionally drained. Asking about special accommodations shows genuine concern for the employee's comfort and safety at work. Whether it's providing a private space for injections so they don’t have to do them in the loo, or ensuring medication is stored safely rather than in the shared kitchen fridge, these small adjustments can make a big difference.

  3. "Can I check in with you again?"

Asking these questions creates a safe space for employees to share their experiences and needs. But things can change, so it's important to ask permission to keep the conversation going and to check in at agreed intervals. Knowing that your manager is there to support you can make all the difference during such a challenging time.

By asking these simple yet thoughtful questions and offering support, line managers can provide the understanding and assistance employees need during these difficult times. It's through empathy, communication, and flexibility that workplaces can truly become inclusive spaces where employees feel comfortable sharing their struggles and receiving the support they need.
